THE WAY IT WAS:
"I wish I could tell you about the South Pacific.
The way it really was. The endless ocean. The
infinite specs of coral we called islands. Coconut
palms nodding gracefully toward the ocean. Reefs
upon which waves broke into spray, and inner lagoons,
lovely beyond description. I wish I could tell you
about the sweating jungle, the full moon rising behind
the volcanoes, and the waiting. The waiting. The timeless,
repetitive waiting."
---From Tales of the South Pacific
By James A. Michener
I went to some islands of the Pacific in 1965. Of course I wasn't
subjected to the trials of World War II. I have a lot of
respect for our service people who fought during those hard times.
However I did have some unique experiences of my own
and that is why I have provided these pages about my days
in islands of the Pacific. Perhaps they will bring back some
memories to those who have been out there and provide
interesting images to those who have not.
