MAIN PAGEThe writer was set to the Pacific by the U.S. Army. This was for the SECOR program.(Link: Geodetic Systems) (Link: Description of SECOR) Our task was to take simultaneous data with tracking stations while receiving data from a satellite in order to accurately locate certain points on the Earth's surface. Assigned to the Army Map Service, Corp of Engineers, the Tour of Duty involved several islands. A tracking station would occasionly move to a new location but these locations were limited to the islands of the vast Pacific Ocean.
TOUR OF DUTY During the 11 months in the Pacific, the writer was at three tracking station locations: Woleai Atoll Yap Reef Islands (Other islands which had tracking stations at certain times included New Georgia, Manus (Admiralty Island), Truk, Kusaei, and Kwajalein.) Woleai Atoll is in the Caroline Islands south of Guam. It was then a U.S. Trust Territory. Yap is the Caroline Islands and southwest of Guam. It was then a U.S. Trust Territory. Reef Islands are in the Eastern Solomon Islands. It was then a British Protectorate. Also... Returning from Yap, we spent several weeks at Guam: Eight Weeks at Guam. In Going Home, time was first spent at Fiji and Oahu: Going Home (Return to Top of Page) When the writer first arrived in southern Guam, he thought it's scenery was great but didn't think much of its amenities (places to eat, shop, etc.).
However, when the writer returned from the tour at Woleai (the first location) he thought that the A&W Root Beer stand at the south part of the island was the greatest thing he had ever found ! Return to Top of Page |
